A gentle, time-tested therapy used for over 2,000 years, acupuncture helps reduce pain, ease stress, and support the body’s natural healing process. It involves placing thin, sterile needles at specific points to stimulate healing and restore balance. Most patients find the treatment deeply relaxing and restorative.
Acupuncture restores the flow of Qi (vital energy) through the meridians. It helps balance yin and yang, strengthens the body’s healing response, and supports harmony of body, mind, and spirit.
Studies show acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, improves circulation, reduces inflammation, and encourages the release of natural pain-relievers like endorphins and serotonin.

Acupuncture is a natural healing technique from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been practiced for thousands of years. It involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to stimulate qi (energy) flow, improve circulation, and activate the body’s natural healing response. From a TCM perspective, acupuncture restores balance by unblocking qi and blood flow, which is essential for overall health. Modern medical research explains that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, triggering the release of pain-relieving chemicals, hormones, and anti-inflammatory responses. This helps to reduce pain, decrease inflammation, and promote both physical and emotional well-being.
Yes! Acupuncture is very safe when performed by a licensed practitioner. We use single-use, sterile needles and follow strict hygiene protocols. Side effects are minimal, with occasional mild bruising or slight soreness at the needle site.
Most people feel little to no pain during acupuncture. The needles are ultra-thin—much finer than those used for injections. You may experience a slight tingling, warmth, or gentle pressure, but any discomfort is minimal.
The sensation also depends on the practitioner’s technique, and you’re in good hands with Dr. Thao, who is known for her gentle and precise needling approach. Rest assured, your comfort is always a priority!

The number of treatments varies based on the condition, severity, and individual response to acupuncture. Acute issues may improve within 3–6 sessions, while chronic conditions often require 12 or more sessions to stabilize. Many patients choose to continue with maintenance treatments to support long-term health and well-being.
Your first session begins with a comprehensive consultation. We’ll discuss your health concerns, medical history, and goals for treatment. This allows me to assess your condition thoroughly and determine the most appropriate care plan. Depending on the complexity of your case, treatment may or may not be provided on the first visit. In some cases, I may need time to review your findings and develop a personalized strategy before beginning acupuncture.
If treatment is provided, fine, sterile needles are gently inserted at specific points and retained for approximately 20 minutes. Based on your needs, I may also incorporate adjunct therapies such as electrical stimulation or cupping to enhance your results. Every step is designed to ensure your comfort and support your body’s natural healing process.
Many patients feel relaxed, calm, or gently energized after a session. Some experience immediate relief, while others notice gradual improvement with consistent care. You may feel a bit drowsy or emotionally lighter—this is a natural part of your body’s healing response. Mild soreness or light bruising at needle sites is uncommon but possible. To support the effects of your treatment, it’s best to avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day—or at least for two hours—and stay well hydrated.
Absolutely! Acupuncture complements other therapies such as chiropractic care, massage therapy, and physiotherapy, enhancing overall results and promoting better health. Depending on your needs and tolerance, multiple treatments can be scheduled consecutively or on the same day for optimal benefit.
Yes! When performed by a qualified practitioner, acupuncture is a safe and effective therapy during pregnancy. It can help relieve morning sickness, fatigue, back pain and stress. Certain points are avoided in early pregnancy, which is why it’s important to seek care from an experienced acupuncturist. As always, consult your healthcare provider before starting any new treatment.
Acupuncture is not covered by OHIP in Ontario. However, many extended health insurance plans do provide coverage if treatments are performed by a Registered Acupuncturist (R.Ac). While we do not offer direct billing, we’ll provide you with an official receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement. Coverage amounts vary, so it’s best to check with your individual plan for details.

How It Works:
Benefits:
Zhu’s Scalp Acupuncture (ZSA) is a specialized technique that blends Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with modern neurology. It uses precise scalp points associated with brain function to stimulate the nervous system and promote neuroplasticity. Gentle, guided movements during treatment further enhance brain-body connection and support recovery.
Acupuncture treats pain by stimulating the nervous system and restoring balance to the body’s energy flow. From a Western perspective, it triggers the release of natural painkillers like endorphins, improves blood circulation, reduces inflammation, and enhances healing. From a TCM perspective, acupuncture works by clearing blockages in the body’s Qi (vital energy) along specific meridians. Both approaches aim to promote the body’s natural healing abilities and provide lasting pain relief.
